Trekvogelpad โ€” Weesp to Bussum

4 or more narrated stops ยท ~4.8 hours ยท 17.1 km

From the fortress town of Weesp through the peat meadows, past a Waterline fort, and along the reed edge of the Naardermeer โ€” the oldest protected nature reserve in the Netherlands, saved from becoming Amsterdam's rubbish dump in 1906 โ€” before climbing gently onto the sandy Naarder Eng to finish in Bussum. About 17.1 km, flat and full of birds. Sold as self-guided narration and route notes; the Naardermeer interior itself is excursion-only and this walk stays on the public path along its edge.

IMPORTANT โ€” Self-guided audio content โ€” sold separately from land access You are buying the narration, route notes and nature commentary for this walk. You are not buying access to the land. Public paths are free to walk, but some nature reserves charge entry, restrict access seasonally, or require permission โ€” check the access notes for this trail and the site manager's own rules before you go.

The route

  1. Vesting Weesp โ€” the fortified start
๐Ÿ’ก The Dutch Water Defence Lines โ€” the Stelling van Amsterdam (listed 1996) extended with the New Holland Waterline in 2021 โ€” form a single UNESCO World Heritage inscription.
  2. Fort Uitermeer on the Vecht
๐Ÿ’ก A fort has stood at Uitermeer since 1673, when the Old Holland Waterline was created during the Rampjaar against the French invasion.
  3. The Naardermeer โ€” the lake that refused to be a dump
๐Ÿ’ก The Naardermeer became Natuurmonumenten's first reserve in 1906, bought to stop it becoming Amsterdam's refuse dump; it is the oldest protected nature reserve in the Netherlands.
  4. Naarder Eng โ€” up onto the sand, down into Bussum
๐Ÿ’ก The Gooi is an ice-pushed ridge (stuwwal) of the Saalian glaciation; the walk crosses from Holocene peat onto Pleistocene sand within a few hundred metres.
