The opening day of the Scholtenpad: out of Winterswijk into the brook-valley country of the eastern Achterhoek, past the old oak woods of Bekendelle, and west to the little fortified book town of Bredevoort. Yellow-red waymarks, walkable in both directions.

💡 The Scholtenpad (SP 1) is 90 kilometres over five day stages and is waymarked yellow-over-red in both directions, like every Dutch Streekpad. - Bekendelle — old wood on the Boven-Slinge
💡 Bekendelle is one of the best-preserved brook-valley forests in the Netherlands, standing on the banks of the Boven-Slinge south-west of Winterswijk. - Bredevoort — the book town inside the walls
💡 Bredevoort has been a designated book town since 1993, with second-hand bookshops occupying a large share of the buildings inside the old fortified centre.
