The route

  1. Dam Square & Royal Palace
๐Ÿ’ก The palace rests on 13,659 wooden piles driven into the marshy soil โ€” the number every Dutch schoolchild once had to learn.
  2. Begijnhof
๐Ÿ’ก Wooden facades were outlawed in 1521 after devastating city fires; Het Houten Huys is one of only two that survive.
  3. Bloemenmarkt (Floating Flower Market)
๐Ÿ’ก Founded in 1862; the stalls genuinely float, resting on barges moored to the Singel quay.
  4. The Golden Bend (Gouden Bocht)
๐Ÿ’ก The three great canals were dug in phases from 1613 in one of history's first examples of large-scale urban planning.
  5. Westerkerk & Anne Frank quarter
๐Ÿ’ก The tower is crowned with the imperial crown of Maximilian I of Austria, granted to the city in 1489.
  6. Noordermarkt & the Jordaan
๐Ÿ’ก The Jordaan's name likely comes from the French "jardin" โ€” garden โ€” brought by Huguenot refugees.
  7. Brouwersgracht
๐Ÿ’ก Readers of Het Parool voted the Brouwersgracht Amsterdam's most beautiful street.
  8. West-Indisch Huis
๐Ÿ’ก The order founding New Amsterdam โ€” today's New York โ€” was signed in this building.
