The route

1. Molen De Valk
   💡 Nineteen windmills once ringed Leiden's walls; De Valk alone survives complete.
2. Beestenmarkt & the Singel harbour
   💡 Leiden has 28 km of waterways and 88 bridges — the most canal-dense city after Amsterdam.
3. Rapenburg & the Academy
   💡 Legend says Leiden chose a university over tax exemption as its siege reward — scholars doubt it, the story is too good to drop.
4. Hortus Botanicus
   💡 Clusius' 1594 tulip beds are recreated on their original spot each spring.
5. Pieterskerk & the Pilgrim quarter
   💡 About 40 of the roughly 100 Mayflower passengers came from the Leiden congregation.
6. Gravensteen & the Latin School
   💡 Rembrandt enrolled at Leiden University at age 13 — and left within months for a painter's studio.
7. De Burcht van Leiden
   💡 During the 1574 siege, the starving city held until the dikes were cut and the fleet sailed in over flooded fields.
8. Koornbrug & Stadhuis finish
   💡 The Koornbrug is one of very few remaining roofed trading bridges in Europe.
