The gentlest opening on the trail: twelve kilometres of Groningen sea-clay country, past dwelling mounds raised against the sea long before there were dikes, along a slow maren, and into a village that once minted its own coin. 💡 The Pieterpad was devised by Toos Goorhuis-Tjalsma and Bertje Jens and walked out between 1978 and 1983; it was opened at its halfway point in Vorden in 1983. - The wierde of Maarhuizen
💡 Wierden were the only building sites in this landscape before dike-building: everything else flooded at high water. - Winsum — three mounds and a mint
💡 The 1057 charter granted market, mint and toll rights.
