The last stage, and the least Dutch-looking: a freely meandering river, chalk grassland grazed by Mergelland sheep, marl quarries full of bats, and a finish on a Cretaceous ridge where a mosasaur skull was dug out around 1770. 💡 The 1751 fresco cycle by Johann Adam Schöpf is the only one of its kind in the Netherlands. - Ingendael — a river let loose
💡 The Geul is 58 kilometres long and falls about 250 metres over its course. - Bemelerberg — chalk grassland
💡 The Mergelland sheep flock now numbers around 250 animals. - Sint-Pietersberg — the end of the path
💡 A Mosasaurus skull was found here around 1770; Asteriornis maastrichtensis, a 66.7-million-year-old bird ancestor, was described from the same rock.
