The chalk country in a single day: from the three-country point on the Vaalserberg, through the highest church village in the Netherlands and the wild-cat woods of the Vijlenerbos, over the Gulperberg and down into Gulpen. Around 17 km, and the only day anywhere on the regional network that crosses the type localities of two named geological formations. The route
- Drielandenpunt, Vaalserberg
๐ก At 322.4 metres this is the highest point of the European Netherlands โ but only since 10 October 2010, when Saba brought Mount Scenery at 870 metres into the country. - Vijlen โ the highest church village
๐ก The Sint-Martinuskerk was designed by Carl Weber and completed in 1862; its tower followed around 1879. - Vijlenerbos โ wild cat country
๐ก Five wild cats were GPS-collared in the Vijlenerbos between May 2014 and September 2015. - Gulperberg and the descent to Gulpen
๐ก The Gulperberg is the type locality of the Formatie van Gulpen, roughly 73 to 69 million years old and 60 to 95 per cent calcium carbonate.
